Signs of Malfunctioning Water Heaters

If your water heater is more than 10 years old or demonstrating any of the following signs, you should call a plumber right away:

  • Loud banging or popping noises when your water heater is operating is a sign of hardened sediment build-up in your tank. When your water heats up, the harden sentiment will move around the water heater tank, which decreases the efficiency of your water heater and damages the tank over time, resulting in leaks.

  • A strong, metallic odor in your hot water supply is a sign that your hot water heater pipes or tank are beginning to rust. This can also lead to leaks and decreased efficiency.

  • Pooling water near your water heater is a sign that you have a leak or fracture in your water heater tank. Double-check your hoses and connectors to ensure the leak is not original from a faulty seal or crack. Otherwise, it may be time for a water heater replacement to prevent damage to your home.

  • If your water supply is taking a long time to heat up, lukewarm, or functioning differently than usual, you may have an issue with the heating element or thermostat, which should be addressed by a professional right away to prevent future complications.
